What is SEO? Search engine optimization is the work of making your website easy for search engines to find, understand and show when your customers search. Google's SEO Starter Guide, updated December 2025, says it's about helping search engines understand your content and helping users find your site.

Key Takeaways

  • SEO earns unpaid visibility in search; Google says it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher.
  • Every page passes through three stages, crawling, indexing and serving, and not every page makes it through all three.
  • SEO splits into technical, on-page, off-page and local work, and each one usually has a different owner.
  • Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization, but they cost clicks: Ahrefs found position-1 click-through rate on AI Overview keywords ran about 58% below forecast in December 2025.

What is SEO, and how does it work?

SEO works by helping each page pass the three stages of Google Search. In crawling, Googlebot discovers and downloads the page. In indexing, Google analyzes the page and stores it. In serving, ranking systems choose the most relevant results for each query. Google's December 2025 guide to how Search works notes that not all pages make it through each stage.

  1. Crawling. Googlebot finds URLs through links and sitemaps, then fetches them. A blocking rule in your robots.txt file or a server error can stop a page here.
  2. Indexing. Google renders the page and reads its text, title, images and structured data. Duplicate or thin pages are often left out of the index.
  3. Serving. When someone searches, Google's systems weigh relevance, quality and usability, plus context such as location and language, to order the results.

You can't buy your way through any stage, because Google's guide to how Search works says plainly that Google "doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, or rank it higher." Ads appear in separate slots labeled as sponsored.

What are the main types of SEO?

Four kinds of work make up SEO: technical SEO makes a site crawlable, fast and secure; on-page SEO makes each page relevant to a query; off-page SEO earns links and mentions from other sites; and local SEO wins map results and "near me" searches. Local SEO matters most when you serve a physical area.

Type What it covers Example task Usual owner
Technical Crawling, indexing, speed, mobile, HTTPS Fix URLs listed as "Not indexed" in Search Console Developer
On-page Content, titles, headings, internal links Rewrite a title to match the query Content team
Off-page Backlinks, brand mentions, reviews Earn a link from an industry association PR or marketing
Local Google Business Profile, local listings Keep hours and address consistent everywhere Branch or marketing team

If your site is new or recently migrated, start with technical SEO, because content can't rank from a page that Google has never indexed. Our guide to technical SEO covers the crawl and index checks, and fixing Core Web Vitals covers speed.

Shortcuts carry real risk, and Google's spam policies, updated August 2026, name link spam, scaled content abuse and keyword stuffing among the practices that can push a site down or out of results.

Why does SEO matter for a business in 2026?

SEO matters because people search before they buy, and organic clicks carry no per-click fee. Google said in March 2025 that it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year. In Indonesia, StatCounter estimates Google handled 92.26% of search engine page views in September 2026, so for most local brands, SEO means Google SEO.

The catch in 2026 is AI answers: Google said in May 2026 that AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has passed 1 billion. Ahrefs' February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found that position-1 click-through rate on keywords with an AI Overview was about 58% below what Ahrefs forecast without one.

Position-1 click-through rate for keywords that show an AI Overview Position-1 CTR, keywords with an AI Overview Dec 2023 7.3% Dec 2025 (forecast, no AI Overviews) 3.7% Dec 2025 (actual) 1.6% Source: Ahrefs, February 2026, 300,000 keywords, desktop Search Console data
Ahrefs forecast a 3.7% click-through rate without AI Overviews and reports the actual rate as 58% lower.

Google's page on AI features and your website says there are "no additional requirements" for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices. The same work now earns both rankings and citations, which our guide on how to get cited by AI explains step by step.

SEO vs Google Ads: when does SEO fit, and how long does it take?

SEO results usually build over weeks and months, not days, so SEO fits businesses that sell something people actively search for. Google's Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours while others take several months, and Google's "Do you need an SEO?" page warns that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.

Your situation Lean on Why
You need leads this month Google Ads first Ads can run as soon as the campaign is approved
Buyers research before they buy SEO Guides and comparisons rank for months after publishing
Rising cost per click squeezes your margin SEO Organic clicks carry no per-click fee
You're testing a new product or market Ads, then SEO Ads show which queries convert before you invest in content

Paid search covers the gap while SEO builds, and the queries that convert in Google Ads show which pages to optimize first.

How do you start and measure SEO?

Start SEO by confirming that Google can index your important pages, then match each page to a query your customers actually type. Measure the results in Google Search Console, Google's free tool for clicks, impressions and indexing. Here's the order we follow in a first-month audit for a small business site.

This step covers ground most beginner guides skip. When we reviewed the seven Indonesian guides ranking for "apa itu seo" on Google Indonesia in October 2026, only one mentioned Search Console or AI Overviews, and none used a comparison table.

  1. Verify your site in Search Console and submit your XML sitemap under Indexing > Sitemaps.
  2. Open Indexing > Pages and fix the reasons important URLs aren't indexed, such as a stray noindex tag or a 404.
  3. In Performance > Search results, sort queries by impressions to find terms you already appear for but rarely win clicks on.
  4. Rewrite the title and opening paragraph of those pages so they answer the query directly.
  5. Add internal links from related pages, then recheck the same report.

Google's Starter Guide suggests waiting a few weeks before you judge whether a change worked. Track clicks and click-through rate in Search Console, and key events (GA4's name for conversions) in Google Analytics, because traffic alone cannot show whether SEO is paying off.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO free?

SEO has no per-click cost, and Google does not sell organic rankings, but it still costs time, tools or agency fees, so treat it as an investment that pays back over months rather than a free channel.

Can you do SEO yourself?

Yes, for a small site, since Google's Starter Guide is written for site owners and Search Console is free. Large sites, migrations and competitive markets usually need specialist help, because technical errors there are expensive to find late.

What's the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO earns unpaid organic results. SEM, or search engine marketing, usually means paid search ads such as Google Ads, though some teams use it for both. Ads stop when the budget stops; SEO results last longer but take longer to arrive.

Does SEO still work with AI Overviews?

Yes. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before Google can cite it in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Expect fewer clicks per ranking on informational queries, so track conversions, not traffic alone.
